'Romney shifts to more moderate stances on taxes, immigration, health care, education' (and every other goddamned thing under the sun)

The final weeks of the presidential campaign are bringing Mitt Romney full circle, back to a question that has tugged at him for nearly two decades: What does he really believe?

Although he declared himself “severely conservative” during the Republican primaries, the former Massachusetts governor has been sounding more moderate in recent days.

There may be room for argument as to whether Romney’s positions are changing. But the emphasis and tone with which he describes them unquestionably are — on issues that include immigration, taxes, education and health care.

On Tuesday, the candidate, who has repeatedly vowed that he would be “a pro-life president,” told the Des Moines Register editorial board that “there’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, President Obama said the comment was “another example of Governor Romney hiding positions he’s been campaigning on for a year and a half.”

What remains to be seen is which Romney will be judged as the real one by voters. Will they consider his flexibility disturbing evidence that he lacks principles or a reassuring signal that he would not govern as an ideologue?”

"The overall story line, however, is fairly clear: Mr. Romney is at best holding ground in the polls, and quite possibly losing some, at a time when he needs to be gaining it instead. Further, it’s increasingly implausible for Mr. Romney to attribute the numbers to temporary effects from the Democratic convention. Mr. Obama’s probability of winning the Electoral College advanced to 83.9 percent in the Nov. 6 forecast, up from 81.9 percent on Wednesday."

Why Mitt Romney isn’t going to get blown out
"It’s easy amid a slew of swing state and national polling that shows President Obama opening up a high single-digit lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney to conclude that we could be witnessing an electoral blowout in the making.
But, there’s plenty of reasons — historical and financial, mainly — to believe the most likely outcome is a narrowing of the race, rather than a second Obama blowout.”

"NYT calls it for Obama: “Mr. Romney is free to pursue this shallow, cavalier campaign for six more weeks, but he shouldn’t be surprised if voters increasingly choose not to pay attention.”"

The official portrait that was made of Mitt Romney as Governor in Massachusetts is pretty weird.

It’s real.

Until now, Romney has been a poor candidate running a clumsy campaign and pointed toward losing a winnable race. Ryan changes that narrative, but only by reframing the election the way Obama’s team wishes to, as a choice between two visions of the social contract as opposed to a referendum on Obama’s economic performance. Instead of teasing out the implications of Romney’s tax cuts, Obama can now directly challenge Ryan’s stated positions in favor of privatizing Social Security a turning Medicare into a voucher program. Florida, a must-win state for Romney, just moved closer to Obama’s column.

Right on. He gave Florida away, and he obviously knew it.  The hope lies in Wisconsin, still a long stretch.  FLAIL MOFO!

oh my god are they going to dress the same throughout the entire campaign?

Pauly has a problem with his suits.  Also, Mittens wants to have sex with him.  Which is totally fine.  Awesome actually.

'Oops: Romney Introduces Ryan As ‘The Next President Of The United States’

Mitt Romney accidentally introduced Paul Ryan as “the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan!” at his introduction rally on Saturday.

After Ryan entered to soaring patriotic music, Romney delayed his speech with aquick correction.

“Every now and then I’m known to make a mistake,” he joked, adding that Ryan’s selection was not one. “He’s going to be the next VICE president of the United States,” he said.

President Obama made a similar mistake in 2008 when he introduced Joe Biden as his running mate.”

Still, you can’t shake the feeling that the race is now Obama vs. Ryan.
